The canals in Santos are not part of a sewer system that dumps sewage straight into the sea. The canals were built around 1900 and are part of a process of urbanization of the city's fluvial system. They also are useful for draining the great amount of water that falls during the tropical rains, in order to prevent the city from floods you wrongly said that still exist there. They also don't stink. At least, I've been living near a "canal" for years, and surely it does not smell as much as Venice's beautiful and famous stinky rivers and canals. regards from Canal 3!
