		<description>When I lived in Brazil I walked by almost all of these canals and they did smell but that may have been because it was summer time and really hot.  I am very glad to hear that no sewer runs through those canals and that none of that stuff is going into the ocean.  Thanks for helping me to get my facts straight.

The canals in Santos are not part of a sewer system that dumps sewage straight into the sea.
The canals were built around 1900 and are part of a process of urbanization of the city&#039;s fluvial system.
They also are useful for draining    the great amount of water that falls during the tropical rains, in order to prevent the city from floods you wrongly said that still exist there. 
They also don&#039;t stink. At least, I&#039;ve been living near a &quot;canal&quot; for years, and surely it does not smell as much as Venice&#039;s beautiful and famous stinky rivers and canals.
