Named after the star-crossed lovers of local legend, the Garajonay National Park is home to one of the few remaining laurel forests in the world, which is why it was made a protected area in 1981 and declared a World Heritage Site shortly after in 1986.
La Palma also has laurel woodlands, along with idyllic bays and volcanic cones. In fact, the island is the site of the Caldera de Taburiente, one of the biggest volcanic craters in the world. The views from Roque los Muchachos are breathtaking, too, although its astrophysical observatory is what many tourists come for.
Last but not the least, there is the island of El Hierro. This island has many natural wonders, including juniper woodlands, colossal cliffs and pine forests. It is particularly known for its spectacular underwater wildlife, so make sure you don’t neglect this island during your holidays in Spain Canary Islands. Most people consider La Palma to be the most beautiful of the 7 islands. You can see the outside of the telescopes at the observatory any day, although it’s closed at night. They hold a few open days a year, see Visiting the Observatory . And three or four hundred years ago the island was rich, so it also has lots of beautiful old buildings, particularly churches, like the one of Nuesta Señora de Angustias
