Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire. It is one of the most famous sites in the world.  It is is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones and sits at the center of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

Archaeologists had believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 BC, as described in the chronology below.

The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury henge monument, and it is also a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge itself is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.

Many also believe that Stonehenge was probably erected as some part of an astronimical calendar.  The unique cicrle of stones is oriented on the rising and setting of the sun.  The orientation of the stones has also excited attention for they seem to match the outcrops in north Pembrokeshire in Wales.

It is said that the best time to view the stones is at sunset.

The following picture is a fabulous image that shows distinction between the blue of the sky and the yellowish-green of the grass around the gray stones of Stonehenge.  Truly a magnificent display of photography.

One word is all that I can utter “WOW”.   Seeing Stonehenge in the background behind this rock with the vivid colors of the sky, clouds and grass is a beautiful image.  This picture makes me wish I was there to see it in person.

As I said above, the time to see Stonehenge is sunset.

I always find these archaeological things to be of great interest to see and visit especially when there are similar structures in other places around the world. Sometimes I think we underestimate how widely travelled people were long ago.

I agree with the underestimating how widely traveled people were back then. I was looking at some family history and one of my ancestors documented his travels in the early 18oo’s to 23 countries.

Interesting images. It really is a shame that many of these stones have been used to build houses and structures in the nearby areas. Personally, think meddling with structures like this is against the gods.
