Fear Packing

It is ten years ago and I am getting ready to fly to Brazil, Sao Paulo for a couple of years.  Fear was driving my packing.  I had a list and I had at least doubled it.  I started by getting some hard cased Samsonite suitcases.  Then I started filling them up with clothes and books and toiletries, I even tried to take three bottles of shampoo… just in case.

Really I would have to say that I was making decisions because of lack of knowledge.  I did not know that Sao Paulo had all the same items that I had and I did not really need any of the junk I was packing.

I had two of this exact case, it was great.

I had two of this exact case, it was great.

I found out after I got to Brazil that trying to pack around two suitcases for two years was crazy.  Especially since they do not fit well on Public transit buses.  I found that everything that I could get back home like toothpaste and shampoo I could get in Brazil.  I first had to realize that the quality may not be there or the same smells I liked, but they got the job done.  The products in other countries do just fine.  So I moved everything I really needed to one suit case and parked the other one at a friends house for the first year.

Finally my fears all gone I got a back pack for some of the really important stuff I needed like my clothes and I parked the other suit case for the last year I was in Brazil.  I bought what I needed and carried as little as I could in my pack.   This worked really well and I was able to recover my cases before going back to the United States.  The only thing that would have been better was if I had packed a little less in the beginning, before my trip.

So don’t let fear pack for you on your next adventure!
